Why not have Grass Roots Inc. handle some of the chores you should be performing in autumn, from fall garden care and lawn work to winterizing trees and shrubs. There are a few essential tasks that will improve the health of your lawn next year. Feeding the lawn with a slow-releasing granular fertilizer in the cooler months is always a good idea. Broadleaf weeds in your lawn compete for water and nutrients and should be removed. When is the last time your soil pH was tested? Excess acidity needs to be corrected with an application of lime. If your soil is too alkaline, apply sulfur. Soil pH correction is a process that takes time, so be sure to take care of it over winter.
Everyone knows that leaves on the grass have to be raked up and removed. Raking the leaves off your lawn is part of the winterizing processes for lawns. Almost every lawn needs dethatching about once a year, or whenever the thatch reaches a thickness of about 1/2 inch. To check, just work your fingers into the grass and note the depth of the thatch layer. Controlling thatch is one of the most important - and most overlooked - parts of lawn care. Thatch buildup creates an environment that can encourage pests and diseases.
Another essential chore is aeration, or punching holes into the lawn to allow moisture and nutrients to penetrate the soil. Hand aeration is tedious and time consuming if you have a large lawn. As a landscaping contractor, Grass Roots will be able to evaluate your yard and perform all the lawn winterizing tasks for you. Give us a call today for a consultation: 203-746-6638.
